I believed it. Idolized it. And more.

The online hustle peeps will tell you eCommerce is all rainbows and fairytales. That all you have to do is work for yourself and your life will be perfect.

What they don't tell you is business is hard and eCommerce is sometimes not as easy as all the peeps make it out to be.

My business I’m reffering to is Bella Luck Charms.

Here are the lies I believed until I actually worked full-time in my business.

  1. You will be happy and fulfilled working for yourself.

This is a lie. Sometimes you’re not that happy and feel all fuzzy and fulfilled inside. You have good days and bad days. Highs and lows. Unexplainable bad weeks, good times too, sometimes you feel bored and question everything. Storms and rainbows come and go.

2. Tell everyone. They will support you.

This is a lie. Do not tell anyone about your business aspirations or how everything is really doing. The people closest to you deep down don’t want to see you do well. Keep your business to yourself. Be careful what you tell people.

3. You just need to find that perfect ad.

A lie. Ads are fickle and can go stale. Paid ads are not an exact science and there is no ‘perfect ad’ because you constantly need to be improving, creating better creatives, and finding new audiences. There is no ‘key’ or ‘lightning bolt’ rather it’s one big puzzle with many moving parts.

4. You will forget your old life in corporate.

A terrible lie to sell people. Only time heals. You never forget the drama and nightmare bosses you had. They are ghosts from the past that still pop up every now and then. A successful business will never heal previous trauma and erase your memory.

5. You will finally have time and the flexibility to do what you want.

Emails need to be replied to. Decisions need to be made. Orders need to be packed and shipped. Sometimes you can't just do what you want. You will have some flexibilty but there weekends and late nights of catching up to do.

6. It’s easy to scale your business

I believed this lie and thought it was all so easy! There are so many Reels and Posts about scaling your business. Depending on your niche it’s much harder in practice. You have supply chain problems, cashflow problems, too many problems to mention. I’m only speaking from experience in my own business. Easier said than done.

7. You will have so much fun

Hmmm. There have been moments when I have to pinch myself. Eating my way through Italy and meeting with our manufacturers. Discovering new products and ideas. And then not so fun moments. Late nights stressing over invoices, arguing with suppliers, making boxes with dry cracked hands.

My negative rant is over.
